Steve,

I agree with what the others have said, and I have a few suggestions in addition.

1) You should un-center your text in your sidebar and remove the link borders on your images: #sidebar img {border: none;}

2) I like the background image but definitely put in a background color behind your main content, it's too distracting to see a patterned background behind your text. Try something a little darker than your header color, using Color Blender.

I like where you are going with this Steve. I agree with John that you might want to find a way to mute the background image (which I really like!) when it is behind the text. Probably the easies way to do this is to put everything you have into a wrapper div. Then you can also address the other tweak I would offer, which is to center your content in the viewport rather than leaving it to the left. On the whole though, I think it shows a lot of promise!

Steve, Glad to see you got your page up and running. I have two observations from my browser here in Jakarta: 1) the script in the background looks a little odd with the header and navigation menu blocking it, byut not maincontent. Did it look OK with the maincontent also blocking it (ie the script background only outside the wrapped?). Alternatively, how did it look as a background for the menu as well? 2) the Serif font in the menu "virginia maps" looked out of place becasue it was the only serif font I could see on the page. Hang in there and good luck with the final tweaks--see you next week!

Steve, the site looks good but in the spirit of comments for improvement I have two points. Number one is that the vignetting on the seal is a little too close to the seal - it partially obscures the motto. I would either not use vignetting here or give the seal some sort of background to blend in with the header. The second point is the background image partially obscuring the main body text. the effects are good, but they shouldn't detract from the main message. See you tomorrow night.
